Artist Profile:  Benjamin Werner

Benjamin Werner is a Brisbane-based artist specialising in large-scale abstract oil painting and most recently exploring contemporary text. His painting practice delves into the nuances of light, capturing expansive experiences of refracted and dispersed colour. His signature circular compositions generate dynamic spatial interactions, drawing viewers into an immersive, almost psychedelic experience. Extending his painting practice into installation, Werner translates abstract landscapes into shimmering, sculptural forms that cascade and flow, intensifying the sensory impact of colour. His meticulous attention to detail reveals a subtle darkness to the work, evoking the atmospheric qualities of urban nightscapes and offering a contemplative view of contemporary culture through abstract painting.

Recently, Werner has expanded his practice to include contemporary text-based work, creating a series that humorously critiques and reflects on his experiences within the arts industry. As Director of All City Arts Services, Werner draws on his extensive knowledge of both local and international art scenes. Using his industry insights and network, he has designed a series of works through rhyming or pun-based references to well-known artists’ names. Known for his quick wit and wordplay, Werner’s captures a wide spectrum of art-world personalities, offering a humorous, insider glimpse into the art scene.
This text series playfully examines themes of communication and community within contemporary culture, taking inspiration from DIY and merchandise aesthetics. Leveling the playing field, the project creates an accessible entry point to the art world, inviting a broad audience to engage, laugh, and share in its insider references. Through this series, Werner fosters a sense of inclusivity, connecting viewers with the art community’s lighter side in a project long in the making.
